Into the Red Zone

Our ride today was in the red zone (meteorologically), so fortunately the planned route was a shorter 81km/51miles, which was just right for the hot conditions. It's not the distances that are tiring, rather than the heat. To help keep us cool, we are soaking the caps we wear under our caps and I soak a neckerchief too. Whenever we have a drink stop that has a toilet, we resoak these to keep cool. When we are cycling we are cooled a bit by the passing air which helps too. The toughest times are waiting at traffic lights or busy junctions as the reflected heat from the tarmac is like standing next to the oven when you open the door. The other bonus we have is the lycra shirt and shorts we wear that wick away any sweat.

We cycled gently in a clockwise direction around the Greater Manchester area, riding over the Warburton Toll Bridge to cross the Manchester ship canal, Leigh, Chorley, then the climbing began as we bypassed Blackburn, before a steep descent into Whalley.

Cycling on a very hot day!!:
