We've made it!
We've done it!! On paper, today was supposed to be a straight forward shorter ride of 85km/53miles. However the rain that passed through overnight changed the wind direction to northwest. This meant that we had a headwind or a crosswind for most of the day. As a result it was hard cycling as the wind was strong at times, either acting as a brake or pushing from the side.
As we left Helmsdale we had a long climb, some of which was into the wind, then shortly after a sharp descent and another rise. The descent was hair raising as we tried to judge where the crosswind might hit us as we went round bends. In reality we rode steadily just in case. Having ridden all this way, the last thing we wanted to do was to crash and jeopardise completing the journey.
The ride then undulated to Wick where we had a café stop. As we left the town a sharp left hand bend brought us back into a headwind which we had all the way to John O'Groats. We were shattered, relieved to have arrived and grateful that we had made it one piece. The strong winds meant it was a bone chilling day, a long way from the heat of last week. Although this is the end of the ride, it's only the beginning of going from the bottom to the top.
